Disciplining The Human Character
Through The Application Of The Principles Of The Katana
After years of teaching at San Kawa Kendo Dojo in Rosebank, Wendy Kyle set out to establish her own dojo in 2017. Thus Shi Hoko Kendo Dojo was born. Tucked away in Randburg, Shi Hoko now runs weekly classes for people of all ages and all walks of life with the constant aim of shaping character through the application of the principles of the sword.
What Is Kendo?
Kendo is the ancient art of Japanese sword fighting. Derived from the ancient sword fighting techniques of the Samurai Warrior of Japan, Kendo, which means "the way of the sword", encompasses both physical and mental skills. Kendo is the Japanese form of fencing with two-handed bamboo swords, originally developed as a safe form of sword training for samurai.
Why Practice Kendo?
The purpose of practicing kendo is laid out by the All Japan Kendo Federation as follows:
The purpose of practicing kendo is:
To mould the mind and body,
To cultivate a vigorous spirit,
And through correct and rigid training,
To strive for improvement in the art of kendo,
To hold in esteem human courtesy and honour,
To associate with others with sincerity,
And to forever pursue the cultivation of oneself.
This will make one be able:
To love his/her country and society,
To contribute to the development of culture,
And to promote peace and prosperity among all peoples.

Shi Hoko In The Community
A few years ago, Wendy got invited to share kendo with the local community via The Outreach Foundation at their center in Hillbrow. As an opportunity to give back to the South African community, she gladly accepted. Today, we are starting to see the fruits of those seeds as a Shi Hoko member now teaches classes weekly in Hillbrow with the aim of helping to develop the underpriveledged.
